Disu was reportedly killed while resolving a land dispute between members of Okunraye Community and some private companies embarking on various massive projects within the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ).

The Governor, while inaugurating the Tribunal, said as a responsive and responsible government, it had become necessary for his administration to set up a Tribunal to investigate the remote cause of the unrest with the view to forestalling future re-occurrence.

He said the unrest, if not properly managed and addressed, could lead to total breakdown of law and order, adding that the government was desirous of protecting the lives and property of the citizens.

The Governor added that as a responsible government determined to enforce the rule of law, it is his duty to take firm and purposeful steps to inquire into the origin, factors and circumstances leading to the disturbances at the LFTZ in order to forestall a re-occurrence.

According to him, “At a time when this government is attracting a lot of foreign direct investments and opening up the economy of our State, we cannot afford to have such disturbances. We will not tolerate any violent acts which disturb the security of lives and property in the State”.

“Having sought advice from the Attorney-General of the State, a Tribunal of Inquiry has been constituted to investigate the remote and immediate causes of this incident and other recommendations therein,” Governor Ambode stressed.

Many workers left their offices in Yola on Thursday to withdraw arrears of salaries and leave grants just paid into their bank accounts by the State Govenment.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Gov. Bindow Jibrilla had on Monday confirmed the receipt of N7.2 billion bailout fund by the state.

He directed the Ministry of Finance to commence payment of the arrears of salaries and leave grants to the workers.

The workers, who besieged the banks and ATM points to make withdrawals, expressed happiness over the payments, with some describing it as “windfall.”

Some of the workers said the bulk payment was timely.

“The whole thing is like a dream come true. I commend the government for this and urge it to sustain the tempo through prompt payment of salaries and leave grants”, Bello Musa said.

Meanwhile, some creditors have started laying ambush in banks and offices to recover their debts.

“We don’t want to miss out from this opportunity and my appeal to workers that are indebted is that they should show gratitude to God by using this opportunity to settle their debts”, Fati, a creditor, said.

NAN reports that private school proprietors who also want to get their share of the windfall have started issuing letters to parents to pay fees for their children and wards.

Ado-Ekiti-Professor Samuel Oye Bandele has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of the state owned University by Ekiti state Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose.

A press statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Idowu Adelusi, in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday, said the governor acted on the recommendations of the Governing Council of the university which said that Professor Bandele came first out of  the three‎ candidates wo were interviewed for the job.

The appointment of the new VC takes effect from December 2, 2015 as the tenure‎ of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oladipo Aina expires on December 1, 2015.

Cattle Breeders commend security operatives for arresting cattle rustlers

National Association of Cattle Breeders (Miyyetti Allah) has applauded the efforts of Nigerian army and other security agencies for arresting cattle rustlers in many parts of the country. The national vice president in charge of Northwest, Alhaji Ya’u Haruna stated this while fielding questions from newsmen in Dutse, Jigawa state capital shortly after the dissolution and constituting of electoral committee of the Association in the state.

Alhaji Ya’u Haruna expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitments towards enhancing security situation in the country, “the appointment credible and patriotic security chiefs contributed immensely towards reducing insecurity bedeviling Northern part of the country especially North-East”.

Bisi Alimi appeals to UK MPs on Nigeria’s anti-gay law

Bisi is actually the very first Nigerian to come out on national TV to appeal to British MPs in London to speak to Nigerian officials and politicians about a draconian law that makes even befriending a gay person a crime punishable by 10 years in jail.

Pics: 37yr old Nigerian drug dealer arrested during a sting operation in SA

A sting operation led by the police together with the mounted unit and K9 unit resulted in the arrest of a 37-year-old Nigerian man on Wednesday, October 21st. According to Capt. Ntobeng Phalal, the police followed up a tip-off and raided a house in Jorissen Street where they arrested the man and confiscated several stolen items and drugs. 

"The items confiscated during the operation include: rock and CAT to the estimated value of R18 000, few dagga plants, cash, 8 cell phones, printers and a laptop," Provincial police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto said.

 

The arrested suspect is due to appear in the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, October 22, Otto added.

Amaechi Finally got Screened Today

It was rather a Rowdy session in the senate over Amaechi's screening. Minority leader of the senate, Godswill Akpabio announced that the PDP caucus in the senate had decided not to be involved in the screening of Amaechi since there are petitions against him that they have not resolved. 

The Majority leader of the senate, Ali Ndume then said that since the PDP senators do not have questions for Amaechi, he should be allowed to take a bow and go. PDP senators vehemently rejected the request and the proper screening began. Ghen Ghen!

Man who died on flight had swallowed packs of cocaine, police say

(CNN)--A Brazilian man who died suddenly on a flight from Portugal to Ireland -- after becoming agitated and biting a fellow passenger -- had swallowed packages of cocaine, a post-mortem has revealed.

A spokesman for Ireland's national police, An Garda Siochana, confirmed that a pathology report had found that John Kennedy Santos Gurjao, 25, had ingested packages of white powder before he died on the Aer Lingus flight from Lisbon to Dublin on Sunday.

One of the packages had burst inside the passenger, making him ill, the pathologist found.

Authorities were awaiting the results of toxicology tests on the powder the man ingested, but were confident it was cocaine, the spokesman said.

Irish media, citing the pathologist, reported that Santos Gurjao swallowed about 800 grams (1.8 pounds) of cocaine in 80 wrapped pellets -- with a street value of about 56,000 euros ($64,000).

Irish authorities were in touch with Brazilian officials to inform Santos Gurjao's family of his death, the Garda spokesman said.

He was pronounced dead at Cork airport shortly after arriving there Sunday evening, police said. The flight had been diverted to Cork after Santos Gurjao became distressed.

A 44-year-old Portuguese woman who was also on board the flight has been released without charge, the Garda spokesman said.

The woman was arrested in Cork after police found 1.8 kilograms (4 pounds) of a white powder in her luggage.

Police initially believed the substance to be amphetamine, but tests revealed it was a harmless substance.

Drug traffickers are occasionally known to use decoys carrying benign substances to divert attention from drug mules.
