Students reportedly sentenced to two months for hawking fuel & constituting a nuisance in Abuja

A male student and his female partner have been sentenced to two months imprisonment, each, by an Abuja Grade 1 Area Court for hawking fuel in a jerry can along Abuja-Kubwa expressway, an act which constitutes an embarrassment to the Government.

According to the prosecutor, a team of police officers apprehended & arrested the accused, bringing them to the police station with 55 litres of fuel in their possession.

Senators of Nigeria’s 8th National Assembly have vowed to stand by the embattled President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, until he is convicted by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
Saraki is currently standing trial at the CCT for alleged false declaration of assets; an offence he allegedly committed between 2003 and 2011 when he was Governor of Kwara State.
“We agreed that this Senate should stand by the Senate President in his trial until proven guilty by the court, in accordance with our Constitution and democratic practices all over the world, including South Africa, Brazil and Russia,” Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu said.

Britain celebrated the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday as minister David Cameron paid tribute to the queen as “a rock of strength for our nation” and her son and heir Prince Charles marked the occasion by reading Shakespeare verses in a special broadcast on the BBC radio. The sovereign, who last year overtook her great-great grandmother queen Victoria to become Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, will meet well-wishers near Windsor Castle later on Thursday to mark the day.

Fire destroys 50 shops in Ladipo market


No fewer than 50 shops were destroyed by fire on Wednesday at Ladipo Auto Spares Market, Mushin, Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that goods, particularly assorted vehicles spare parts, were burnt at the Osoro section of the market.
Nkire Ezeigbo, Public Relations Officer, Ladipo Auto Dealers Association, told NAN that the fire started at about 3.30 a.m. from the Osoro/Akinwumi area of the market.

Workers rush to withdraw salaries in Adamawa 

Many workers left their offices in Yola on Thursday to withdraw arrears of salaries and leave grants just paid into their bank accounts by the State Govenment.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Gov. Bindow Jibrilla had on Monday confirmed the receipt of N7.2 billion bailout fund by the state.
He directed the Ministry of Finance to commence payment of the arrears of salaries and leave grants to the workers.
The workers, who besieged the banks and ATM points to make withdrawals, expressed happiness over the payments, with some describing it as “windfall.”
Some of the workers said the bulk payment was timely.
“The whole thing is like a dream come true. I commend the government for this and urge it to sustain the tempo through prompt payment of salaries and leave grants”, Bello Musa said.
Meanwhile, some creditors have started laying ambush in banks and offices to recover their debts.
“We don’t want to miss out from this opportunity and my appeal to workers that are indebted is that they should show gratitude to God by using this opportunity to settle their debts”, Fati, a creditor, said.
NAN reports that private school proprietors who also want to get their share of the windfall have started issuing letters to parents to pay fees for their children and wards.

Fayose approves appointment of Bandele as Ekiti Varsity new VC


Ado-Ekiti-Professor Samuel Oye Bandele has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of the state owned University by Ekiti state Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose.
A press statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Idowu Adelusi, in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday, said the governor acted on the recommendations of the Governing Council of the university which said that Professor Bandele came first out of  the three‎ candidates wo were interviewed for the job.
The appointment of the new VC takes effect from December 2, 2015 as the tenure‎ of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oladipo Aina expires on December 1, 2015.

Cattle Breeders commend security operatives for arresting cattle rustlers


National Association of Cattle Breeders (Miyyetti Allah) has applauded the efforts of Nigerian army and other security agencies for arresting cattle rustlers in many parts of the country. The national vice president in charge of Northwest, Alhaji Ya’u Haruna stated this while fielding questions from newsmen in Dutse, Jigawa state capital shortly after the dissolution and constituting of electoral committee of the Association in the state.
Alhaji Ya’u Haruna expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitments towards enhancing security situation in the country, “the appointment credible and patriotic security chiefs contributed immensely towards reducing insecurity bedeviling Northern part of the country especially North-East”.
