A face-off between the Minister
of Power, Prof Barth Nnaji and workers of PHCN (Power Holding Company of Nigeria) which recently took a
name-calling turn when the minister accused the protesting workers of
being agents of generator and diesel importers who do not want
improvement in the power sector.
The workers on their part
alleged that the minister is unhappy because Manitoba won the bid, that
the minister would have preferred his company clinched the deal. Both
parties have been trading accusations and counter accusations since the
federal government set in motion arrangements to actualize the
privatization of PHCN.
The workers say their grievances
include: government’s plan to pay only one year severance salary, and
trying to make them sign Retirement Service Account, when there was no
account in the first place. On their part, the minister of power and
officials of the ministry say government issued retirement benefit
letters to w
orkers of the 17 of the 18
PHCN units earmarked for privatization; that the issue of severance
package and retirement benefits for workers of Transmission Company of
Nigeria does not arise since government is not privatizing the TUC.
Total retirement benefit is calculated at N80million. The maximum
amount a PHCN employee will receive is put at N38million as against the
N2million maximum pay as reported by some officials of the National
Union of Electricity Employees...
lol... this was what caught my eyes *the minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji accusing the protesting workers of
being agents of generator and diesel importers who do not want
improvement in the power sector*.
