Commander of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, Alhaji Suleiman
Aliya, has warned that excessive alcohol consumption can reduce mental
performance especially in youths.
Aliya spoke at the Ajeromi/Ifelodun Local Government
in Lagos on Friday at the drug control awareness campaign for secondary
school pupils organised by the Organisation of Nigerian Chaplains in
conjunction with Lagos State Inter-ministerial Drug Abuse Control
Committee in Lagos on Friday. The drug control awareness campaign, which
was themed, “Drug and you,” attracted participants across the state.
The representative of Lagos NDLEA commander, Mrs.
Titi Okunloye, warned youths to stay away from alcohol to avoid the risk
of addiction which could slow down mental and physical productivity.
According to him, alcohol is one of the illegal drug
which is socially acceptable but harmful to the health of the consumers,
especially those who abused it by taking it in excess. if you love life, read more... just saying
“Drug is any chemical substance which changes the
system behaviour of it consumer after ingestion and alcohol cannot be
left out.
“Students are most times influenced to first consume
it at the experimental stage by curiosity and peer pressure before they
graduate to becoming occasional drinker, later regular and gradually to
an addict.
“Alcohol consumption can also be responsible for
diseases such as heart attack, lose of weight, liver failure and others,
it also reduced the concentration level of students and increase woeful
performance in intelligent students,” he added.
He stated that the agency would be collaborating with
stakeholders to ban smoking in public places such as schools, offices
and markets.
Aliya advised residents to avoid areas where they could inhale passive smoke or other drugs that were harmful to their health.
“The original smoker of the cigarette is even safer
than those that perceived it because he has filter which a perceive
smoker does not have.
“So, when you see anybody smoking around you, just
leave the place. If it is in a bus, please get down it is harmful to
your health,” he noted.
