The
family of Santos (Nwabueze) Korie, the man who was killed by policemen
around Daleko Bridge, Mushin, Lagos, has demanded justice for his
murder.
PUNCH Metro had reported that
Korie was killed on April 11, 2013, after being accosted by two
policemen while allegedly driving against traffic along Mushin-Isolo
Expressway.
The family, in a letter addressed to the
Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, said it was saddening
that policemen, who are paid to protect lives and property, were the
ones perpetrating such a dastardly act.
The letter, which was signed by the
deceased’s cousin, Kelechi Madu, read, “My cousin was driving his car
and was about to connect a bridge at Iyana-Isolo when two armed
policemen approached his vehicle and before he could ask them what they
wanted, the policeman at the driver’s side had shot him in the head at
close range and bust his brain.
“To show how disgusting and cowardly
these policemen were, they had to run from an active crime scene. Is it
not their job to protect the scene of a crime like this? If they thought
they had not done anything wrong, why would they flee?”
Although the police authorities had
initially assumed that the murder was carried out by suspected hired
killers in police uniform, PUNCH Metro had reported that two policemen
and a civilian had been arrested and transferred to the State Criminal
Investigation Department, Yaba.
Madu, who wrote from Canada, said all
those who were connected with the murder must be arrested adding that
the family would not rest until they were all brought to justice.
He urged the IG to order the
Commissioner of Police for the state police command, Umar Manko, to pay a
condolence visit to the family of the deceased.
Madu also said an independent committee should be set up to investigate the murder.
He said, “Establish an independent
committee to investigate and report back on the circumstances
surrounding the shooting of an innocent citizen who was just going about
his lawful business.
“ It is important that this committee be
comprised mainly of reputable citizens given the bad reputation the
Nigeria Police have in solving crime of this nature and often wanting to
protect their own at the expense of the criminal justice system.”
